It was first discovered in 1943. The spores of Clostridium botulinum in the environment are often infected by trauma to the hands and feet. The spores germinate and multiply into bacteria in the anaerobic environment deep in the wound and produce toxins that enter the bloodstream and cause poisoning. Therefore, the infection method is similar to tetanus. Wound botulism has been relatively rare in the decades since the report. Until 1982, the first case of wound botulism caused by heroin injection was reported. Wound botulism was continuously discovered. For example, the number of wound botulism poisoning caused by heroin injection in the United States has increased significantly, with 20-40 cases per year, second only to tetanus. Before 1999, there was no report of wound botulism in the UK, but between 2000 and 2004, 74 cases of wound botulism caused by heroin injection were found in the UK. There is no similar report in my country.
