Physical properties of carbonyl compounds

(1) Boiling point: The carbonyl group has a dipole moment, which increases the attractive force between molecules. The boiling point is higher than the corresponding molecular weight of alkanes, but lower than that of alcohols.

(2) Water solubility: The oxygen atoms of aldehydes and ketones can form hydrogen bonds with water, so lower aldehydes and ketones can be miscible with water.
