However, this phenomenon occurs approximately once every 7 years. Scientists study the global climate and believe that El Niño is not an isolated natural phenomenon, it is an aspect of global climate anomalies. In normal years, the Pacific coast of Peru’s west coast is controlled by a cold ocean current and has a large range of natural fishing grounds. Once the climate is abnormal, the cold ocean current in the eastern Pacific is replaced by a warm ocean current.
