The Stirling engine is a closed-loop piston heat engine. Closed cycle means that the working gas is kept in the cylinder, while the open cycle, such as the internal combustion engine and some steam engines, needs to exchange gas with the atmosphere. Stirling engines are generally classified as external combustion engines.
