The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy predicts that the demand for nano-textiles in the international market will increase rapidly in the next 9 years, and the transaction volume is expected to reach nearly 40 billion US dollars. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy of Korea commissioned the Korea Textile Industry Federation to conduct research and analysis on the demand for nano-textiles and trade trends in the international market within three months starting in August 2004.

The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy believes that the international market’s demand for nano-textiles is based on 15 billion U.S. dollars and will increase by 10.7% every year. By 2007 and 2012, the international market’s demand for nano-textiles will reach 24 billion. US dollars and 39.7 billion yuan. By 2012, the international market’s demand for ultra-high-performance filtration nano-textiles used in pharmaceuticals, electronics and life sciences will reach 9.6 billion US dollars, and the demand for nano-textiles used in bio-chemical weapons and sports entertainment will reach 26 Billion US dollars, the demand for nano-textiles for energy storage will reach 20.5 billion US dollars.

South Korea’s demand for nano-textiles is US$1.9 billion, accounting for 12.1% of the total international market demand. By 2012, South Korea’s demand for nano-textiles will reach US$7.2 billion, accounting for 18.1% of the total international market demand at that time.

3. South Korea’s development in nanotechnology is almost entirely concentrated in the microelectronics industry

Through the Tera-Level Nanodevices Initiatives sponsored by the Ministry of Science and Technology (Ministry of Science and Technology), South Korean universities and industries are focusing on the development of the next generation of microelectronic devices, including Memory devices with terabit capacity and components with terahertz data processing speed.

Samsung, one of South Korea's largest corporate consortia, has an Advanced Institute of Technology (Advanced Institute of Technology), which is engaged in the research and commercialization of microelectronics technology.
