A mineral species is determined mainly on the basis of its chemical composition and crystallographic properties, which is a key factor to determine the establishment of new mineral species and new mineral names. If a mineral is found whose chemical composition and/or crystallographic properties are significantly different from any existing mineral species, there is a possibility that the mineral is a new species.
