Colorless Transparent Ether

Aug 18, 2020

Ether is a colorless transparent liquid. There is a special pungent smell. With sweetness. Very volatile. Its steam is heavier than air. Under the action of air, it can be oxidized into peroxides, aldehydes and acetic acid, and exposure to light can promote their oxidation. When the ether contains peroxides, the separated residual peroxides after evaporation can cause a strong explosion when heated to above 100°C; these peroxides can be removed by shaking with 5% ferrous sulfate aqueous solution. Reacts with a mixture of anhydrous nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid, and will explode violently. Soluble in lower alcohols, benzene, chloroform, petroleum ether and oils, slightly soluble in water. The relative density is 0.7134. Melting point -116.3°C. The boiling point is 34.6°C. The refractive index is 1.35555. Flash point (closed cup) -45℃. Flammable and low toxicity.
