Clinical Manifestations Of Infants With Hemolytic Disease

●Yellow skin and sclera

The skin and sclera (commonly known as the white eyeballs) of infants with hemolytic disease are obviously yellowish, which often appears within 24 hours or the second day after birth, and rapidly worsens within 48 hours. The serum bilirubin concentration rises sharply by more than 12-15 mg/dl, even reaching Above 20mg/dl.

●Anemia

Children with anemia of varying severity can cause heart failure and swelling of the whole body in severe cases.

●Hepatosplenomegaly

No obvious enlargement in mild cases, and obvious enlargement of liver and spleen in severe cases

●Neural symptoms

Drowsiness, refusal of milk, loose limbs, and then convulsions, manifested as staring, blinking, stiff and straight limbs, or reflexes, sometimes screaming, etc. It is called kernicterus or bilirubin encephalopathy It often occurs when the serum bilirubin reaches more than 20mg/dl. It is caused by indirect bilirubin entering the brain tissue and damaging brain cells.

●Fever

Children with hemolysis are often accompanied by fever.
