Binding energy means that when an "object (system)" is composed of two or more parts, there must be mutual attraction between the components to make them unite. If the components are separated to "infinity", of course, a certain amount of energy is needed to overcome the attraction, that is, work is needed. The amount of work required to do, which indicates how tightly each component is combined, is called the binding energy of the object.
