Basic concept of polymer composites

In a narrow sense, a polymer composite material refers to a multiphase material in which a polymer is compounded with another material having different compositions, shapes, and properties, and can be roughly classified into a structural composite material and a functional composite material. Polymer composites in a broad sense also include polymer blending systems, collectively referred to as "polymer alloys."

When the dispersed phase is a metal/inorganic material, it is called an organic/inorganic polymer composite material; and when the dispersed phase is a heterogeneous polymer material, it is called a polymer blend. There are a large number of examples of polymer composites in nature, such as trees, honeycombs, and bird's nest.
