The Dutch physicist Zeeman discovered in 1896 that when the light source that generates the spectrum is placed in a strong enough magnetic field, the magnetic field acts on the luminous body to change the spectrum, and a spectral line will be split into several polarized spectral lines. The phenomenon is called the Zeeman effect.
