Transmission ratio selection

The optimum transmission ratio between the starter and the engine should ensure reliable starting of the engine and at the same time maximize the power of the starter. In the actual selection, due to the structure limitation of the flywheel ring gear and the drive gear, the transmission ratio is often slightly smaller than the optimum value. As a result of this selection, the starter does not reach maximum power during operation, but the torque of the starter increases, which is advantageous for starting. The gear ratio of the starter to the engine is generally selected within the following range. The gasoline engine is 13 to 17 and the diesel engine is 8 to 10.
