Skiing originated and developed in Scandinavian countries. SLALOM is also a Norwegian word, meaning to slide on a sloping road. The International Ski Federation was founded in 1924. The Nordic skiing event was included in the first Winter Olympics held in Chamonix, France in 1924. The leading countries in world skiing include Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, Sweden, Finland, and countries around the Alps in Western Europe: France, Italy, Austria, Germany and Sweden, as well as the United States, Russia, etc. Generally speaking, Scandinavian countries have an advantage in Nordic skiing events, and Alpine countries have an advantage in alpine skiing events.
