Suspended matter in water

Dec 01, 2020

Suspended substances in water are fine particles with a particle diameter of about 0.1μm-100μm. Visible to the naked eye. These particles are mainly composed of sand, clay, protozoa, algae, bacteria, viruses, and macromolecular organic matter, and they are often suspended in water streams. The turbidity of water is also caused by such substances.

Solid particles that can be suspended in sea water for a long time. Sometimes called suspended solids or suspended colloids. It is divided into two parts: organic and inorganic. The organic part is mostly detrital particles, which are composed of carbohydrates (see carbohydrates), protein (see protein), lipids (see lipids), etc. The inorganic part includes terrestrial mineral fragments (such as quartz, feldspar, carbonate, and clay), aquatic minerals (such as precipitated glauconite and staurolite and other silicates, carbon).
