stratum corneum definition
The stratum corneum (Latin for 'horny layer') is the outermost part of the epidermis, which is mainly composed of 10 to 20 layers of dead cells without flat nuclei. When these cells shed, the cells underneath the basal layer are pushed up to form a new cuticle.
