pentose phosphate pathway
The main feature of the pentose pathway is the direct oxidative dehydrogenation and decarboxylation of glucose without going through glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. The coenzyme of dehydrogenase is not NAD+ but NADP+. The NADPH produced is used as a reducing agent for biosynthesis. It is not passed to O2, and there is no production and consumption of ATP.
