local thermodynamic equilibrium

Jan 08, 2022

The deep layer of the stellar atmosphere has a high temperature and the shallow layer has a low temperature. Obviously, the entire atmosphere is not in a strict thermal equilibrium state. Therefore, the law of thermodynamic equilibrium does not apply to the entire stellar atmosphere. In order to describe the thermal state of the stellar atmosphere, K. Schwarzschild and Milne proposed local thermodynamic equilibrium in 1906 and 1921 respectively.
