Kerr electro-optic effect refers to the phenomenon of electrically induced birefringence proportional to the square of the electric field. A substance placed in an electric field is oriented and anisotropic due to the action of its molecules by electricity, resulting in birefringence, that is, the refraction ability of the substance to light in two different directions is different.
