Introduction to cupric sulfate
Cupric sulfate, inorganic compound, chemical formula CuSO4. It is white or off-white powder. The aqueous solution is weakly acidic and blue. However, when crystallized from an aqueous solution, blue copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO4 · 5H2O, also known as bile alum) is generated. This principle can be used to test for the presence of water. It decomposes when it loses crystal water when heated. It is stable at normal temperature and pressure, does not deliquesce, and will gradually weather in dry air.
Copper sulfate is an important raw material for preparing other copper-containing compounds. When mixed with lime milk, Bordeaux liquid can be used as bactericide. It is also used as an electrolyte when electrolytically refining copper.
