Since 1891, he has studied at the University of Nebraska and Harvard University.
He received a bachelor's degree in 1896, a master's degree in 1898, and a doctorate in chemistry in 1899.
In 1900 he went to Germany to study at the University of Leipzig and the University of Göttingen, under the guidance of W. Ostwald and W.H.
In 1901, he returned to Harvard University to teach.
He taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1905-1912 and was dedicated to physical chemistry research.
He became a professor in 1911.
After 1912, he served as the head of the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley.
Died in Berkeley, California on March 23, 1946.
