Biological nitrogen fixation refers to the process by which nitrogen-fixing microorganisms reduce nitrogen in the atmosphere to ammonia. Nitrogen-fixing organisms belong to individual tiny prokaryotes. Therefore, nitrogen-fixing organisms are also called nitrogen-fixing microorganisms.
